Trump Rejects Iranian Strait of Hormuz Proposal
During a White House Situation Room briefing the same day, Trump was informed about Tehran’s proposal, which also includes a request for the United States to lift its blockade on the strategically vital maritime route. The report, published by The New York Times, cited unnamed sources familiar with the internal discussions.
The suggested plan does not address the future of Iran’s nuclear activities. Several American and Iranian officials told the Times that Tehran has consistently dismissed US demands to completely stop uranium enrichment, asserting that international law grants it that right. Additionally, Iran has declined to surrender its existing stockpile of enriched uranium.
While the precise reasons behind Trump’s dissatisfaction remain uncertain, he has consistently emphasized the importance of meeting both nuclear-related conditions. An unnamed US official indicated that agreeing to the proposal could undermine Trump’s ability to claim a political win.
“The United States will not negotiate through the press — we have been clear about our red lines and the president will only make a deal that’s good for the American people and the world,” White House spokesperson Olivia Wales stated in comments to the Times.
