Trump Opts to Keep Iran's Blockade in Place
Citing US officials briefed on recent internal deliberations, the report revealed that Trump elected to sustain crushing pressure on Iran's economy and oil export lifelines by maintaining a chokehold on maritime traffic to and from Iranian ports.
Officials told the Journal that Trump weighed his available options and concluded that resuming active bombardment or withdrawing from the conflict entirely carried significantly greater risks than holding the blockade in place.
The standoff traces back to February 28, when the US and Israel launched a coordinated offensive against Iran — a move that triggered retaliatory strikes from Tehran against what it characterized as American interests scattered across the region, with a significant concentration in Gulf states.
A ceasefire brokered through Pakistani mediation took hold on April 8, followed by formal negotiations hosted in Islamabad on April 11–12. Those talks, however, collapsed without a breakthrough agreement.
Trump subsequently confirmed that the truce had been extended at Islamabad's request, pending a formal proposal from Tehran.
That proposal arrived — but landed poorly. Trump signaled Monday that he was disinclined to accept Iran's latest offer, which put forward a plan to reopen the Strait of Hormuz while deferring all questions surrounding Tehran's nuclear program to a separate, later round of negotiations.
