Report Says US Negotiators Fear Leadership Vacuum in Tehran Could Stall Iran Talks

(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump’s negotiating team is reportedly concerned that internal conditions in Tehran may prevent any potential agreement with Washington from being formally approved, according to a report cited on Wednesday.

The report claims that while US negotiators still view a possible settlement as achievable—one that could end ongoing hostilities and address the remaining aspects of Iran’s nuclear program—they worry that there may be no clear authority in Tehran capable of giving final consent to such a deal.

It further suggests that divisions within Iran’s leadership are contributing to the uncertainty. The country’s Supreme Leader is described as having limited communication, while tensions are said to exist between Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) officials and civilian negotiators, who are reportedly not aligned on strategy.

The report also alleges that internal restructuring followed the assassination of a senior Iranian security official in March, and that his successor has struggled to coordinate between the various power centers, including the IRGC and civilian institutions.

According to the same reporting, Iran briefly indicated through Pakistani intermediaries that it might be open to talks, but this position reportedly shifted quickly, with Tehran later demanding an end to a US naval blockade instead.

On the US side, Trump is said to believe that military pressure has already achieved its main objectives and that Washington should seek to exit the conflict. However, the report adds that if mediation efforts led by Pakistan fail to bring Iran to negotiations within a desired timeframe, the possibility of renewed military action remains under consideration.
