Pakistan, Afghanistan Resume Key Border Crossings

(MENAFN) Pakistan and Afghanistan reopened two of their primary border points to travelers on Saturday following several weeks of shutdown, after conducting discussions in the Turkish city of Istanbul.

The Torkham crossing, linking Pakistan's northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province with Afghanistan's eastern Nangarhar province, and the Chaman border in southwestern Balochistan, which connects to Afghanistan's southern Kandahar province, had been closed on Oct. 12 for all movement after deadly clashes erupted between the two nations.

Pakistan and Afghanistan have a total of 18 border crossings, with Torkham and Chaman serving as vital routes for trade and civilian travel.

The Torkham border was reopened after Islamabad and Kabul reached an agreement on Thursday to uphold a ceasefire during the Istanbul talks.

A Pakistani official at the Torkham border told a news agency by phone, requesting anonymity since he was not authorized to speak to the press, "The border crossing reopened today for families traveling to Afghanistan, but it will remain closed for trade."

The official further mentioned that trade activities at the border are anticipated to resume on Monday.

Additionally, Pakistan has also reopened the Chaman border crossing with Afghanistan.

The Turkish Foreign Ministry reported that Pakistani and Afghan delegations are scheduled to reconvene in Istanbul on Nov. 6 to discuss further guidelines for enforcing the ceasefire and strategies to prevent additional tensions.
